Guitarist Bruno Mangueira blends Brazilian accents with jazz Lawrence B. Johnson/ Special to The Detroit NewsBrazilian guitarist Bruno Mangueira is what you might call musically bilingual. But when he and three ace American sidemen mix bossa nova with jazz standards at Ann Arbor's Kerrytown Concert House on Friday night, no translations will be required.
"Brazilian and American jazz histories are similar — music from slaves with music from Europe mixed in a local way," says Mangueira, 32, who's visiting the U.S. to work on his doctoral degree in musical arranging at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music.
"My father was an engineer who played guitar, and he always listened to a lot of Brazilian music, the great composers of bossa nova and samba," says Mangueira.
"From age 4, I learned to play guitar by ear and when I was a teenager, I started listening to jazz and became interested in improv."
That fascination with American jazz ramped up when Mangueira's high school band instructor brought out big-band charts by the likes of Glenn Miller and Henry Mancini. The guitarist started making his own arrangements for big band, then took the next natural step and began composing.
Some of Mangueira's more intimate original pieces will be heard at Kerrytown when he takes the stage with two Detroit area jazz notables, bassist Paul Keller and saxophonist Doug Horn, and Cincinnati pianist Phil DeGreg.
DeGreg, who has performed several times with Mangueira, says the guitarist is "a fun person to be around, with lots of humor. He is very serious about music, though, so he is very exacting, especially when we play his music.
"He also loves playing jazz standards, and this is a big reason he came to the States, so he could absorb the influence more deeply. He has a good feel for it. His bossa nova playing is amazing, and I have learned so much about the style just being around him and playing some of that repertoire.
