Accidental broadcast of proposal puts Greeley couple in media spotlight

The video of Mullin proposing Thursday to Baldwin while reporter Brenda Washington from the Kansas City, Mo., station did a live shoot for a story on the cost of healthy eating is now viral, as they say in Web speak. It made Yahoo’s national page and it’s gotten hundreds of thousands of hits, and the two are about as famous as you can be for 15 minutes. They were on “Good Morning America” on Saturday. The two, who plan to wed in September, are new Greeley residents. Mullin, 24, will start this fall as a teacher for New Hope Academy, a charter school at 1900 AA St. in north Greeley. Baldwin, 20, will start as a junior in elementary education at the University of Northern Colorado. They don’t plan on having kids soon, though they just got their first baby, a fluffy white puppy they named Yankee. The two met just about a year ago. Baldwin was a friend of Mullin’s sister, and the two hung out a bit, but they were both coming out of serious relationships and weren’t looking. They didn’t even start talking a lot until Mullin graduated in December from Evangel University in Springfield, Mo., which they both attended. The relationship grew over Skype and cellphones, sometimes until 3 a.m., even when Mullin had to go to a landscaping job at 6 a.m. This fame is fun, though also weird, the two said. Once Washington pulled the couple over for an impromptu interview after her cameraman alerted her to what was going on behind her back, Mullin’s first thought was, “Oh, no,” and then he thought it would be fun if it was on TV. Once people saw the clip, and then saw it in other places on the Web, Mullin joked with Baldwin that they would be on “Good Morning America.” The station called a day later.
