Retired zoning officer the 'go-to guy' in community
Jim Hall is one of those guys.
The one to call when a problem arises. The one to turn to when you need a solution. The one always willing to pitch in and lend a hand.
And, of course, the one who passes the buck and refuses to take credit for any of the good that he's done.
The "go-to guy in the community," as Silver Spring Township Supervisor Dave Lenker called him.
"Jim Hall is the man to call to get it done," Lenker said.
Hall, 68, president of New Kingstown Fire Company, retired as a zoning officer at the end of 2010, following nearly 20 years of service to Silver Spring Township.
"He was a true public servant," Lenker said. "There's not many people like him anymore. He was always one of those guys who dug a little deeper. He was one of those guys that you could depend on to pull you through."
Many hats
Hall, 68, began his tenure with the township in 1992, performing inspections for the sewer department before taking on the role of zoning officer in 1994.
As zoning officer, Hall oversaw the massive growth in the past two decades on the Silver Spring corridor of the Carlisle Pike.
"When I first started with the township, they were just building the first Walmart Store ... the Silver Spring Commons Shopping Center," he recalled. "Rahal Honda and Lawrence Chevrolet were the two big automobile dealers in Silver Spring Township. Now it's expanded quite a bit."
With retirement, Hall said he'll miss both the unpredictable nature of the job and the camaraderie of township staff.
"The number of years that I was at the township, there were very few days that I ever hated to go to work. I enjoyed my job. It was good to me," he said. "Every day was different. It didn't matter what you planned. There was always something that came up that changed your plans, and you dealt with whatever it was at that point in time."
"We had such good relationships with all of the employees of the township," he added. "It didn't matter if it was office staff or highway crew or the sewer department, everyone worked together as one unit.
