UK: Supermarket Fuel War Set To Continue
The major supermarket chains across the UK are gearing up for another fierce fuel price war, with a series of cuts being announced over the past few days.
Tesco has announced plans to cut prices by up to 2p a litre, which follows a 1p cut that it announced last week. The cut follows a decision by both Asda and Morrisons to cut the price of fuel by 2p over the weekend. Sainsbury’s is also expected to follow suit with price cuts.
A spokesman for the AA welcomed the move, noting: “It's good news when Tesco moves – the average price across the UK tends to come down very quickly as a result”. The AA however noted that the average price for unleaded petrol had barely fallen at all last week – down from 136.5p to 136.1p a litre. That was reflected in calls by the Road Haulage Association, which said fuel prices should fall by as much as 5p this week. The group said the drop in global crude prices has not been adequately reflected at the till, and noted that lower fuel prices would help to lower food costs in particular.
