At Philadelphia's Kimmel Center: What Broadway Dreams May Come

It is early May of this year. The halls of Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center are bustling with activity. You can hear a woman practicing a song in a nearby bathroom. You wait for the sound of shattering glass from the operatic high notes she is hitting, but it doesn’t come. Everywhere you look, people have a special gleam in their eyes. A gleam of hope. Desire. A gleam of the chance to make their dreams a reality. These are the auditions for the Broadway Dreams summer intensive and tour. “Initially it was just a few weekend workshops,” says Annette Tanner, the executive director and co-founder of the Broadway Dreams Foundation. “And before we knew it, we had all these ‘A list’ people who were willing to come and be a part of the teaching because growing up they didn’t have anything that allowed them to go and work with the people that they aspired to be like.” “Dave Barrus is our music director and one of my co-founders, who went on to be on Broadway in ‘Les Miz.’ He is a serious vocal coach of note,” says Tanner. “We also have Eden Espinosa who was one of the Elphabas from ‘Wicked,’ Jarrod Emick, who was the Tony Award winner for ‘Damn Yankees,’ Quentin Earl Darrington who is absolutely the best teacher that I have ever seen. He was Coalhouse in ‘Ragtime.’ He also did ‘The Color Purple’ and ‘The Lion King.’ “This year in Philadelphia we have a lot of younger girls and Richard bases the show around the students that we have,” says Tanner. “So, that was the reason and thought behind bringing Andrea McArdle in. With the 2012 Broadway revival of ‘Annie,’ we decided that we would do an ‘Annie’ segment for the Philadelphia show.” “Andrea McArdle and I have a huge history together. I did ‘Les Miz’ with her.
